What is International Baccalaureate?
The programmes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) have a long-standing reputation for their academic and personal rigor, challenging students to excel in their studies and in their personal growth, and develop a lifelong thirst for learning.
The IB aspires to help schools develop well-rounded students who respond to challenges with optimism and open minds, are confident in their own identities, make ethical decisions, join with others in celebrating our common humanity and are prepare to apply what they learn in real-world, complex situations.
More than one million students in 149 countries study the four IB programmes, which are designed to:
- help students develop the attitudes and skills they need for both academic and personal success;
- be student-centered, promoting personal challenge;
- offer a broad curriculum with significant content; and
- explore globally significant ideas and issues
IB mission statement
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
The four IB programmes include:
The Primary Years Programme (PYP): For students aged 3 to 12 years, the PYP focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP): For students aged 11 to 16, the MYP provides a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation.
The IB Diploma Programme (DP): For students aged 16 to 19, this is an academically challenging programme with final examinations that prepare students for success at the university level and beyond.
The IB Career-related Programme (CP): For students aged 16 to 19, the CP consists of DP courses studied alongside a unique CP core.
