7TH AND 8TH GRADE TRACK

Dual Meet Start Time

Field events will begin approximately at 3:45.  The home team can begin their tries before 3:45 in field events before the other team arrives.  The visiting team is allowed a 10 minute warm-up after arrival at the field. Running events begin approximately at 4:00 with the mile run. Field event participants should go immediately to his/her event and check in with the field judge. Participant should tell the field judge of any running events in which they will be participating for the meet.

 

All school specific coaching concerns will be referred to each coach’s school Athletic Director.

 

Rules

  1. The 7th and 8th grade boys and girls will practice together and compete at the same sites.
  2. The season will consist of 5 weeks of practice and track meets.
  3. Three relay team maximum for dual meets in the 4/100, 4/200, and 4/400 (boys), and 800 medley (girls). Each relay will have one heat.
  4. A meet shall be called if the outside temperature is at or below 35 degrees. The meet will be scored only after seven events are completed, including both grades and genders.
  5. The order of events to be followed as indicated below.
    1. The top runners are to always run in the first heat(s) Please make this clear to the athletes.
    2. Nine participants per school are allowed to enter events.
    3. Athletes may participate in four events.
    4. Two attempts per field event at duals, two attempts at District.
  6. All schools are to fill out stickers. The sticker must include the participant’s event, grade, gender, first and last name, and must be the correct color for their school. Each participant must have a sticker for every event that they are in. Stickers collected at end of race.  One score sheet for each event.

  1. Running Events
    1. One false start will result in a disqualification.
  2. General

Home site will provide implements. Personal implements will not be allowed. This does not include batons. All schools must provide their own batons. Running spikes are allowed, but not required, and the spike must meet CHSAA/NFHS requirements (not to exceed one inch).  Each school must set up a team camp. Those who are not participating in an event must stay at the team camp.  Team camps should be located at the goal posts.

  1. Uniform

Athletes must wear a shirt or jersey with the school name on it.

Shorts must be of athletic style.  No cargo shorts, etc.

Shorts must be worn on the hips.  No sagging or rolled up shorts.

 

FIELD EVENT GUIDLEINES

High Jump

It is a foul if the competitor:

  1. Displaces the crossbar in an attempt to clear it.
  2. Touches the ground or landing area beyond the plane of the crossbar, or the crossbar extended without clearing the bar.
  3. After clearing the bar, contacts the upright and displaces the crossbar or steadies the bar.
  4. Fails to initiate a trial, attempt that is not carried to completion within the defined time period after being called.  (1 minute)
  5. Fails (total body) to go over the bar.
  6. Takeoff must be from 1 foot.
  7. An athlete may pass at a height.  A pass taken by an athlete will count as one of their two attempts at any given height.
  8. Girls starts at 3' 6'  move in 2 inch increments-1 inch increment in case of a tie
  9. Boys starts at 4' move in 2 inch increments-1 inch increment in case of a tie

Penalty: An unsuccessful trial is charged, but not measured.

      j.    Athletes must exit at back of pit, or the side of the pit. 

  • Points of interest:
  • 2 attempts allowed.
  • Must check in/out with judge.
  • Bar can be lowered if a participant is legitimately absent for a lower height.  Judge for the event has the discretion to determine if the absence is legitimate.

 

 

Long and Triple Jump

It is a foul if the competitor:

  1. Allows his/her shoe to extend over the foul line or make a mark in front of it on the takeoff.
  2. Runs across the foul line. Or foul line extended.
  3. In the long jump, does not keep his/her head in the superior position, i.e., no somersault.
  4. In the triple jump, in hopping does not land on the same foot used in the takeoff, or in stepping does not land on the other foot from which the jump is performed.
  5. In the process of landing or leaving the pit, touches the ground outside the landing nearer the foul line than the nearest mark made in the landing pit.
  6. Fails to initiate a trial that is carried to completion within 1 minute after being called.
  7. Athletes must exit at back of pit or the side of the pit, if an athlete walks back to the front of the pit after a jump, it will be a foul/scratch.

Penalty: An unsuccessful trial is charged, but not measured.

Long jump boards will be 6’ and 8’ from the pit.  Athletes may use any board.

Triple jump boards will be 16’ and 22’ from the pit.  Athletes may use any board. 

An athlete can use the 12’ board for long jump or 24’ board for triple jump if skill level permits it.

  • Points of interest:
  • 2 attempts allowed.
  • Measurements shall be recorded to the nearest lesser 1/4 inch.
  • The judges shall hold the tape in such a way that the readings will be at the takeoff board.

 

Shot Put (6# for girls, 8# for boys)

It is a foul if the competitor:

  1. Doesn’t execute a legal put made from the shoulder.
  2. After stepping into the circle, fails to pause before starting the put.
  3. After stepping into the circle, touches the circle (not including the inner face of the stop board or the band, if one is used) or the ground outside the circle during a put.
  4. Allows the shot to drop behind or below the shoulder during the put attempt.
  5. Touches the top or end of the stop board before the put is marked.
  6. Puts the shot so it does not fall within the sector lines.
  7. Is not under control before exiting the back half of the circle.
  8. Leaves the circle before the implement has landed and the judge calls "mark."

Penalty: The put is not measured, but counts as a trial.

Points of interest:

  • 2 attempts allowed.
  • Measurements shall be recorded to the nearest lesser 1/4 inch.
  • The measurement shall be recorded from the nearest edge of the first mark made by the shot to the inside edge of the stop board nearest such mark, measured along the extended radius of the circle.

 

Discus (1KG)

It is a foul if the competitor:

  1. Fails to enter and leave the circle from the back half.
  2. After stepping into the circle, fails to pause before starting the throw.
  3. After stepping into the circle, touches the circle, (not including the inner face of the band, if one is used) or the ground outside the circle during the throw.
  4. Throws the discus so it does not fall within the sector lines.
  5. A discus, which hits the cage and/or an object outside the sector before landing within the sector.
  6. Is not under control before exiting the back half of the circle.
  7. Leaves the circle before the implement has landed and the judge calls "mark."
  8. Fails to initiate a trial that is carried to completion within 1 minute after being called.

Penalty: The throw is not measured, but counts as a trial.

 

Points of interest:

  • 2 attempts allowed.
  • Measurements shall be recorded to the nearest lesser inch.
  • The measurement shall be from the nearest edge of the first mark made by the discus to the inside edge of the throwing circle nearest such mark, measured along an extended radius of the circle.

 

DUAL MEET GUIDELINES

 

Field Events

  • Field event participants must check in within 10 minutes of arriving by giving their sticker to the event worker or will be disqualified for that event.
  • The athlete must complete his/her field event within the allotted time frame, unless competing in a running event that would prevent him/her from doing so.
  • Each participant will get 2 attempts.  High jump may pass lower heights without penalty.

STAGER RESPONSIBILITIES

After placing students in their heats/lane setup, inform them of the following rules. Athletes should be ready to begin their race as soon as they step onto the track.

 

1600 m Run:      Waterfall start

May cut in around the first curve once you have 2 good strides ahead of the other runner(s).  If you cut a person off, you will be DQ’d.

(Starter will determine a DQ)

 

100 m Hurdles:   Must stay in your lane at all times. If you enter a different lane, you will be DQ’d.

100 m Dash:       Must stay in your lane at all times. If you enter a different lane, you will be DQ’d.

4x200 m Relay:  Your team must remain in its lane the entire race.

800 m Medley    First three runners stay in their lanes.  4th runner is allowed to break as soon as they receive the baton.  Start is on the white stagger line.  Exchanges 1 and 2 are yellow, and 3rd exchange is blue.

 

4X400 m Relay:  First runner must stay in his/her lane the entire way. 2nd runner will stay in their lane until the break line.  3rd and 4th runners receive the baton in first/second lane cafeteria style.

MIDDLE SCHOOL DISTRICT TRACK MEET

    1. Two participants per running event (lanes assigned by fastest time)
    2. Two participants per field event (2 attempts)
    3. One relay team per school
  3. Each school must set up a team camp so that those who are not participating in an event can gather at their camp instead of at undesignated places.

  • Field events begin at 4:00pm
  • Running events begin at TBA beginning with the mile run.
  • Athletes must remain in the stadium stands.  Athletes may only be on the field when they are actually competing in a field event or have been called to the staging area for a running event.
