The Stallion Scoop: 14Dec17




The Principal Chronicles continue ... So I recently received some feedback that I dress very casually and don't look like a principal but rather a teacher. As many of my loyal readers know, I welcome any and all feedback, but this one was a little perplexing to me. So since I have been on a fashion kick with this blog lately I thought I would tell the story of why our dress code is what it is here at Cherokee Trail.
For as long as I have been in Administration, I have always held onto the thought that "if you dress professionally you act professionally". So I wore ties and dress pants every day but Friday, since in every school I have been in Friday was always spirit day. I continued that practice up through the middle of my second year here at CTE.
Things changed when I visited Design 39 Campus in San Diego. That school is the most beautiful I have ever seen and is frequently called "the Google school" since Google gave 51 million dollars to build it. Everything about that school screamed professionalism and education, however, when we were met by the head of school and met with all of the teachers, every single one of them was dressed very casually: baggy shorts, vans, t-shirts, etc. Even the head of school, he was dressed in a polo and jeans. I thought that maybe this was a San Diego thing and kept my mouth shut during the tour.
Once the tour was over and I had a seen most of the school and again, I asked the head of school about their dress code. His answer forever changed the way I look at staff dress.
When I asked him why his staff dressed so casually, he looked at me like I was an alien. Then he simply said that Design 39 was built around meeting kids needs and doing what is best for kids (my exact philosophy as well, by the way). He said that he expects his staff to be "in the trenches" with their students. He wants them on the floor, moving around, and most importantly: engaging with the kids. He told me teachers don't do that when they are dressed up because they are always afraid of ruining their clothes or getting dirty, so he allows them to dress casually with one exception; Anytime the kids are expected to present or there are conferences, the staff dresses up because the kids are expected to dress up. He wants his adults to model what is expected of the students. For example, when we as adults go to job interviews we typically dress professionally but when we are at home interacting with our families we do not.
This made perfect sense to me and we made the change as soon as we got back to Colorado. I want our staff to be as engaged as possible with our students and since we made the change there has been a sizable difference in how our staff works with students. They are all over the place and I love it. I wouldn't trade it for the world and I don't think our students would either.
Although I truly love the feedback, and will make sure daily that I at least look casually professional, I am very happy with our current dress code and, hopefully, when people see me they think more about my work with students as opposed to looking a certain way. Unless of course, they see the socks. It's Batman today by the way.

DOUGLAS COUNTY – Graduation rates in the Douglas County School District (DCSD) continue to climb. Data released today by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) shows the on-time, four-year graduation rate is now 90.4 percent.

DCSD students also made an impressive showing at graduation. The class of 2017 earned more than $82 million in scholarships.

DCSD has one of the highest graduation rates in the Denver metro area. According to CDE, DCSD graduation rates have risen steadily from 81.9 percent in 2009 to 90.4 percent in 2017.

The top two-percent of female athletes in Douglas County School District (DCSD) were honored at the annual Girls and Women in Sports Luncheon last week at Chaparral High School. This year represented the 30th national celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day, created to encourage and promote the participation of girls in athletics. The girls who were honored were selected by their school’s coaches, athletic directors and principals for their outstanding achievements.

Working through the recent winter break, the Douglas County School District Board of Education has kicked off its search for DCSD’s next permanent superintendent. Following a thorough vetting of potential search firms, Ray & Associates (no relation to Board Director David Ray) has been hired to conduct the national search. The cost of the firm, excluding travel expenses, is $40,000. The money will come from the school board's budget, which is used for costs such as legal expenses and conferences.
