Rocky Heights students receive surprise call by NFL star, compete in cooking contest

HIGHLANDS RANCH- Recently, Douglas County School District’s (DCSD) Nutrition Services put out a challenge to Middle School Students: create a recipe that could be offered to students using the Super Bakery Eat-A-Bowl Bread Bowl.

The challenge came in the form of a contest which allowed students to submit an original recipe that could be used for breakfast or lunch. The only rules were to consider the ease of preparation, student acceptability and that the recipe needed to include a protein.

Finalists competed for a $200 gift card and football autographed by NFL Hall of Famer, Franco Harris. Harris, who received a degree from Penn State University in food service and administration, created Super Bakery after he retired from the NFL. His hope was to produce and market a healthy “junk” food for schools and hospitals.

As an added bonus, the winning recipe will be featured on the district menu next school year.

DCSD Nutrition Services offers several Super Bakery products to students; so when they were approached to create a contest to students using the Eat-A-Bowl bread bowl, it was an easy choice.  

Of numerous submitted recipes, five students were selected to compete in the finals held in the Rocky Heights Middle School Culinary Arts Class Kitchen on April 15. Students had to prepare their recipe for judging. The recipes were judged on eye appeal, creativity, color and texture, taste and overall impression. On hand to judge were principal Celine Wicks, kitchen manager Cori Hakes, and Super Bakery representative Celeste Linhard.

The top recipes included: The Spicy Chili & Cheese Bread Bowl (Nick Milushov), Cheesy Mashed Potato Goodness (Sasha Pollard), Pizza Soup Bread Bowl (Sam Anderson), The Eggtastic Bowl (Hailey Purfurst), and Chicken Bacon Bread Bowl (Mallory Schuster). All students attend Rocky Heights Middle School.

Although all recipes were delicious, the one that came out on top was the Cheesy Mashed Potato Goodness by Sasha Pollard (pictured, left). After receiving the prizes, Sasha and the other students were surprised with a personal phone call from Franco Harris congratulating them on their work.

DCSD is requesting parent input on the health and wellness of our students. Last year, DCSD received a large planning grant from Colorado Health Foundation in an effort to assess how the district supports students through the lens of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model (WSCC). The mission of this grant is to review the current state of DCSD's student health and wellness program, and then formulate a three to five-year plan based on stakeholders’ needs, the latest research, and best practices. As part of this process, we would like your input.

It may look like a plain, white shipping container was just parked on the backyard grounds of Mountain Vista High School. The contents of the container are anything but plain, though. Walking inside the container, different colors of ambient lighting glow, futuristic-looking equipment and tall towers are suspended from the ceiling, and the humidity level is set to 70 percent. The container has been recycled into a new kind of learning opportunity for students.
