This school year, all DCSD students in 7th, 9th, and 11th grades will be invited to participate in the Signs of Suicide (SOS) prevention program. SOS is an evidence-based program used in schools nationwide for over 20 years. It teaches students how to recognize the signs of depression and suicide in themselves or others and encourages them to reach out for help using the ACT model: Acknowledge, Care, Tell.
Through short lessons, age-appropriate videos, guided discussions, and reflection activities, students will learn:
-
That depression is treatable, and help is available
-
How to identify warning signs in themselves or a friend
-
How to ACT by telling a trusted adult if they’re concerned
Research shows that prevention efforts like SOS reduce stigma, increase help-seeking, and save lives.
