Homebound Programming
Homebound programming may be available to students who are unable to attend school due to a qualifying medical or psychological condition. Homebound programming is a temporary option. Requests for homebound programming must be initiated through the student’s school of attendance. Families are required to provide medical documentation and allow applicable parties to speak with medical professionals to devise an appropriate plan. Plans are developed based on the student's individual needs/circumstances in the least restrictive environment possible by all applicable stakeholders.
Programming Differences
Homebound programming is NOT Home Services (a long-term placement greater than 90 days available to highly impacted students through Special Education), nor is it Home Base (a behavioral intervention in neighborhood schools), nor Home School (where parents are the primary educators for their children).
Important Guidance: Students who proactively know they will be absent more than 20 consecutive school days for a health-related condition should begin the homebound referral process as soon as there is an indication of extended absence due to medical or mental health reasons.
Students should not wait until they have been out for 20 consecutive school days to initiate the referral. Early application helps ensure the continuity of educational services and supports.
