Douglas County School District Students Invited to submit favorite recipes, Shadow the Chef

DOUGLAS COUNTY - Shepherd’s Pie; Tomato, Basil & White Bean Soup; Cucumbers, Rice Wine Vinegar & Dill: Recipes have been trickling into Douglas County School District (DCSD) Nutrition Services from students, or their parents, seeking the opportunity for the one special student to enjoy Shadow the Chef Day with DCSD Executive Chef Jason Morse.

“Shadow the Chef Day was born out of the recognition that we have a HUGE number of students who themselves are in the kitchen preparing food, or want to be, or who just simply enjoy their parents’ great, healthful cooking,” said Chef Morse.

“I want to spark that passion for good, healthy food and how to best prepare it,” he said.

“I have the most awesome job in the culinary world.  I get to create fantastic food, develop recipes, talk to students and inspire their love of living healthfully, mentor ThunderRidge ProStart students, visit our school cafeterias.  And I work with an amazing team,” said Morse.  “Who knows? The next great chef could be amongst our student body!”

All DCSD Students, grades 4-12, are eligible to win Shadow the Chef Day by submitting a favorite snack and/or main dish recipe featuring the use of fruits and/or veggies (plus a selfie).  The winning recipe will be featured in Nutrition Services e-news letter Food for Thought.

“If selected, the fortunate culinary prodigy will enjoy a day shadowing yours truly.  We’ll kick-off Shadow Day by meeting at his/her school early to enjoy a special breakfast, we’ll attend a class together and depart for a day of teaming to meet the culinary needs of our amazing District,” said Morse. 

The specific Shadow Day will be selected based on the mutual scheduling preferences of the winner and the Chef. Valid entries must be received by October 11th via e-mail to jdjones[at]dcsdk12[dot]org (Subject line: “Shadow”). Winning entrant under the age of 18 must be granted parent permission to utilize student photo and recipe.  Entrants, please include a phone number for verification purposes, your school and brief comments about what you enjoy about the recipe.

DCSD is requesting parent input on the health and wellness of our students. Last year, DCSD received a large planning grant from Colorado Health Foundation in an effort to assess how the district supports students through the lens of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model (WSCC). The mission of this grant is to review the current state of DCSD's student health and wellness program, and then formulate a three to five-year plan based on stakeholders’ needs, the latest research, and best practices. As part of this process, we would like your input.

It may look like a plain, white shipping container was just parked on the backyard grounds of Mountain Vista High School. The contents of the container are anything but plain, though. Walking inside the container, different colors of ambient lighting glow, futuristic-looking equipment and tall towers are suspended from the ceiling, and the humidity level is set to 70 percent. The container has been recycled into a new kind of learning opportunity for students.
