Leave of Absence and Disability

DCSD Leave Options

The District provides employees with various leave options to accommodate personal or extenuating circumstances. If you anticipate being away from work for 10 or more consecutive days, please contact the ADA and Leave Coordinators to discuss the necessary steps. Absences lasting between 5 and 10 days, a formal leave may not be required.

Note: Some absences may require a medical release before returning to work, even if an official leave of absence isn’t taken.

Types of Leaves of Absence

Employees can take leaves of absence either as a continuous block of time or intermittently, for reasons such as:

  • Personal serious health condition

  • Family member’s serious health condition

  • Birth, adoption, or foster care of a child

  • Military qualifying exigency or USERRA

  • Personal leave (other circumstances/Block Leave Only)

For more details on leave options, short- and long-term disability, FAMLI, and more, please visit the Leave of Absence Google site.

 Leave of Absence Information

FMLA and Non-FMLA Leave

FMLA
Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave with continued health insurance coverage.

Non-FMLA
For employees not eligible for FMLA, the District offers Non-FMLA leave for similar reasons. Non-FMLA also provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave with continued health insurance coverage under the same terms as FMLA.

FMLA and Non-FMLA leave can be taken for up to 12 workweeks within a rolling 12-month period. Contact the ADA and Leave Coordinators for more information.

Short-Term Disability (STDI)

If you're unable to work due to a medical condition, Short-Term Disability is available through Lincoln Financial Group (LFG) if you meet eligibility requirements. After a 14-calendar day waiting period and exhausting all accrued sick days (whichever is longer), LFG provides 70% of your salary.

Colorado FAMLI (Family and Medical Leave Insurance)

Colorado’s FAMLI program offers paid leave for personal or family care needs, such as the birth or adoption of a child or caring for a family member with a serious health condition. Please note that the Douglas County School District has opted out of the FAMLI program.

Important: Time used under Short-Term Disability or FAMLI will run concurrently with the 12 weeks of FMLA/Non-FMLA. Both require you to file for a leave of absence through the District, and both require medical documentation.
