Community survey proposal approved, process to begin mid-August

CASTLE ROCK—The Douglas County School District (DCSD) Board of Directors recently approved a proposal by Denver-based research firm, Corona Insights, to implement a district-wide community survey.

Tasked by the Board in March 2016, a committee of DCSD employees, as well as Board President, Meghann Silverthorn, interviewed seven vendors before selecting the proposal by Corona Insights to be put before the DCSD Board for approval. The Board approved the proposal and a potential funding source during its July 19, 2016 meeting.

“In doing detailed interviews with the seven participating companies, Corona Insights brought a wide range of expertise across various disciplines in providing comprehensive services and a neutral representation of gathered data for a price comparable to other vendors,” said selection committee member Jess Stainbrook, who also serves as the Chief Community Relations Officer for DCSD.

Corona’s Principal and CEO, Kevin Raines, presented the details of a four-phase survey process to the Board.

The first phase consists of three community town hall meetings and three DCSD employee town hall meetings, as well as one-on-one interviews with members of the Board to collect input on the types of questions that should be included on the survey.

Additionally, Corona will conduct interviews with higher education officials.

“These would be people at a variety of public and private institutions, in state and out of state, to understand what they think we should be asking,” Raines explained. “It’s exploratory to help us understand what [they think] a public school system should be concentrating on [for] students who are ready to succeed at a college level.”

Once an initial set of survey questions is determined, 20 community members will be paid a stipend to test the survey and offer feedback to Corona representatives.

The second phase includes conducting the finalized community survey itself, targeting parents of older students, parents of younger students and Douglas County residents who do not have a child in the school district. An in-person, interactive survey will also be conducted with a sampling of high school students and online surveys will be conducted with families of homeschool students and those enrolled in online learning. An “exit survey” will additionally be conducted with select graduating seniors.

Employees will also be surveyed as part of the process. Raines offered the option of conducting an electronic, password protected survey with all DCSD employees or a hand written survey with a sampling of 1,000 employees.

“As we have been listening to the community and parents over the past year or so, it is clear there is a great desire for a community survey that allows for various DCSD stakeholders to give input to the process that will help the Douglas County Board of Education get insight as to how to set the course for education moving forward,” said Stainbrook.

The third phase includes follow up interviews with a sampling of community members from varying categories.

“When you conduct this kind of research, a lot of things confirm what you think and then sometimes they’ll surprise you. It happens pretty much every time we do something like this,” Raines said. “So you want to go back [and ask] why do people think this.”

The final phase includes the release of the results of the survey and seven public presentations.

The DCSD Board of Directors approved up to $220,000 for Corona Insights to conduct the entire survey process, with carryover funds being the primary source of funding.

The public town hall meetings are scheduled for Saturday, August 20, 9:30 am at Rock Canyon High School, Tuesday, August 23, 6:30 pm at Chaparral High School and Thursday, August 25, 6:30 pm at Castle View High School. These meetings are open to any members of the community that would like to attend. Students are welcome. The town hall meetings for DCSD employees only are scheduled for Thursday, August 18, 6:00 pm at Rock Canyon High School, Wednesday, August 24, 6:30 pm at Mesa Middle School and Wednesday August 31, 6:00 p.m. at Legend High School. These meetings are open only to employees of DCSD.

DOUGLAS COUNTY – Graduation rates in the Douglas County School District (DCSD) continue to climb. Data released today by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) shows the on-time, four-year graduation rate is now 90.4 percent.

DCSD students also made an impressive showing at graduation. The class of 2017 earned more than $82 million in scholarships.

DCSD has one of the highest graduation rates in the Denver metro area. According to CDE, DCSD graduation rates have risen steadily from 81.9 percent in 2009 to 90.4 percent in 2017.

The top two-percent of female athletes in Douglas County School District (DCSD) were honored at the annual Girls and Women in Sports Luncheon last week at Chaparral High School. This year represented the 30th national celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day, created to encourage and promote the participation of girls in athletics. The girls who were honored were selected by their school’s coaches, athletic directors and principals for their outstanding achievements.

Working through the recent winter break, the Douglas County School District Board of Education has kicked off its search for DCSD’s next permanent superintendent. Following a thorough vetting of potential search firms, Ray & Associates (no relation to Board Director David Ray) has been hired to conduct the national search. The cost of the firm, excluding travel expenses, is $40,000. The money will come from the school board's budget, which is used for costs such as legal expenses and conferences.
