Community Connections Blog

Volunteer work, fundraising and donation drives are common activities in DCSD. An abundance of generosity is present in Douglas County, as told in the stories here. From the students who share their pennies, to the schools who raise tens of thousands of dollars, each effort is applauded and worthwhile.

Seventh grade students on team Snowmass at Sierra Middle School successfully held the school's 12th annual bazaar last Friday, raising $3,100 for multiple charities.

On November 13th, a devastating attack was made on Paris, France. Horrified by this news, Ms. Melissa Knox, a French teacher at Mesa Middle School asked her students what they could do as Americans to show their support.

The Mesa Middle School's Taste of IB club recently raised money for the Douglas County School District's Homeless Education Program.

Earlier this year, North Star Academy (NSA) hosted a school-wide assembly to learn more about Alopecia, an immune condition that affects over six million people in the United States, including one of NSA’s kindergarten students. A special fundraiser was held with the NSA community after the assembly, raising over $1800 for the Alopecia Foundation.

Patrick Boland, a Discovery student at Acres Green Elementary, started the nonprofit Ferocious Fighters last year with the goal of providing care packages to kids across the state, country, and world who are battling CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). CRPS is a chronic pain condition affecting the nervous system on a limb of the body following an injury.

Members of Douglas County High School's student council are holding their first annual “Holiday Huskies” fundraising week from November 30th to December 4th. The goal of this fundraising event is to support the Children’s Hospital of Colorado, as well as the Douglas Elbert Task Force. They will be collecting new toys, non-perishable food, and lightly used clothes during this week. They are asking for the toys to be both new and unwrapped, as they will be going to the kids at Children’s Hospital.

Casey Boyd, a senior at Castle View High School, spearheaded a project with the National Honors Society to collect and donate hats, gloves, and scarves to the Batelsand preK-8 grade school on the Pine Ridge Native American Reservation in South Dakota. Many of the families on the reservation do not have heat, running water, or enough food to put on the table.  The last thing they can afford are Christmas presents, so Casey decided to try to add toys to the donation effort, as well.
