Safety is always at the forefront when it comes to getting kids to school. Fortunately the DCSD Transportation Department is full of experts in their fields. In June of 2018 the Colorado State Pupil Transportation Association held its annual competition for trainers and technicians.

“It’s a chance for us to go out and learn more and try to hone in on our career,” says service technician Mike Clark. The contestants prepared on the first day by taking classes and notes. The skills were put to the test the following day.

“You’re scored on what you find, what you don’t find, how you would repair something, or actually finding what you need to do,” explains fleet technician Zach Davis.

Thirty-two contestants participated in this year’s competition. It was the first year for trainer Wil Ulrickson. “It’s great and I think everybody else should take more advantage of it.” He finished second place in the trainers’ competition.

Clark finished first in the written exam for the second year in a row. This was the fourth year that Davis competed. He finished first, not only in the technician’s competition, but first overall. “It’s a good opportunity to spend time with other people in the field and learn things from them."
