DCSD Retirees Honored for their Service

DCSD Retirees Honored for their Service, Commitment to Students
Posted on 05/09/2018
Last month, leaders of the Douglas County School District took a moment to recognize the great contributions made by individuals who are retiring from the district this school year. During the ceremony, held at Cimarron Middle School, each retiree was recognized by Chief Human Resources Officer Steve Colella and the retiree’s principal, director, or colleague of their choosing.

One of those individuals retiring is Nancy Burdic, DCSD’s Director of Early Childhood Education, who has served with the district for 21 years and a total of 37 years in public education. During her time with DCSD, she has developed community partnerships, helping the preschool program to be recognized across the state and nation as a model program. Some of these partnerships helped plant the seeds for grant funding to support programs for young children with disabilities.

“Fancy Nancy,” as her staff lovingly calls her due to her reputation for style, was also part of the inaugural cohort of the Buell Early Childhood Leadership Program, which develops leaders in Colorado with the goal of heightening Early Childhood Education in the state.

Burdic says she has many wonderful experiences that she remembers in her time with DCSD, but one really stands out for her. “On one Board meeting night, high school students were being recognized for awards won at the state choral competition. The superintendent asked each student to introduce themselves. The first three appeared a little nervous and shy, but the fourth one, confidently said his name, talked about how much he enjoyed the competition, and said he would be happy to answer any questions. He was very engaging, and the entire audience enjoyed what he had to say. Meanwhile, I was madly texting his former preschool teacher about this wonderfully gregarious fantastic kid! When we worked with him in preschool, he had very limited language skills and needed support in many other areas. To see how he had developed was a magical moment for me.”

Lisa MoffattAnother individual retiring this year is Lisa Moffatt, Special Education teacher at Pine Grove Elementary School in Parker. Lisa has been at the school for 22 years, and a total of 32 years in education.

“Whenever I was walking into a special education meeting with a family that Lisa was running, I would have a sense of calm because she always has the spa music on in the background first of all,” says Assistant Principal of Pine Grove Molly Gnaegy. “But parents come in and they are immediately comfortable, Lisa takes time to make sure those parents feelings are honored. She always helped me feel calm because she is so smart, she’s always been a great mentor to the other special education team members, and I’ve learned so much from her.”

Moffatt jokes that she knew it was time to retire “when a former student’s son showed up in first grade at the school.” She adds that she feels blessed to have taught at Pine Grove these last 22 years.

Thank you to all of the teachers and staff members who have given so much to Douglas County School District over the years, and our best wishes for your retirement! View a list of these retirees below.
