Dear DCSD Community,

We are excited to share that our teachers and other student-facing staff are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and many have appointments coming up very soon! We are working diligently to coordinate with local vaccine providers to make appointments available to Douglas County School District (DCSD) staff as supply allows. We are thrilled to see our efforts gain momentum as many of our educators and other staff have received vaccination invitations from Kaiser Permanente, Centura Health, Children’s Hospital and others, and many of our staff members have appointments for the first dose of the vaccine as early as this weekend or early next week. The COVID-19 vaccine provides another layer of protection for our staff members and provides some predictability in our planning for next steps.

We will be tracking vaccinations of our staff in each of our schools. Data from tracking will enable us to have a clear picture of how many of our student-facing staff members are vaccinated. This will provide a more predictable and accurate plan for next steps, including a timeframe for when our middle and high school students can return to full, in-person learning five days a week. Of course, we will continue to make eLearning available for the remainder of the school year for those families who have selected that option.

While our staff is not required to receive the vaccine, it’s great to see such a large number taking advantage of this opportunity. Having our staff members receive the COVID-19 vaccine will provide a safer working environment for staff and students, and reduce the number of quarantines needed for our teachers and school staff members. We are optimistic that at this rate, all of our staff who wish to receive the vaccine will have one or both doses by Spring Break.

We are incredibly thankful to our local healthcare providers and are optimistic about what the vaccination of our staff may mean for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year and beyond.

Sincerely,

Corey Wise
Interim Superintendent
Douglas County School District
