At a meeting of the School Safety Committee of the Colorado General Assembly on August 20, Douglas County School District (DCSD) Superintendent Dr. Thomas Tucker remarked that DCSD will not allow arming of staff, other than dedicated security personnel, in any of its schools (neighborhood, magnet, alternative, or charter).

From the beginning of Dr. Tucker’s superintendency, he has emphatically supported and endorsed the district’s safe schools plan, which is evidence- and research-based. This plan is driven by Board of Education policy ADD and state statute. Based on this, Dr. Tucker stated that he is not in support of arming staff, other than security officers who are employed solely for security purposes, and he reinforced that position at yesterday’s School Safety Committee meeting.

DCSD Board Policy ADD states:
...procedures for the employment, training and use of armed security officers to provide security of school buildings, events and grounds, including requirements that: any armed security officer be employed solely for security purposes; that any armed security officer be P.O.S.T. certified (certified by Peace Officer Standards and Training); and, that uniformed armed security not be allowed to conceal their weapons while engaging in their duties.

The DCSD Board of Education supports Dr. Tucker and his diligence in executing Board Policy ADD. DCSD expects all of its schools to abide by ADD and follow DCSD’s research-based practices to keep each and every student and staff member safe.
