2019 National Merit Scholarship Recipients

National Merit Scholarship CorporationMore than 1.6 million students from 22,000 high schools across the country entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently released the names of winners from three award categories: Corporate Sponsorship Awards and $2,500 Awards. Recipients of a third category, College and University Sponsorship Awards, are scheduled to be announced this summer.


National Merit Corporate Recipients
More than 1,000 national finalists won Corporate Sponsorship awards financed by about 160 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. Eight students from Colorado are being recognized for their educational excellence and we are excited to announce that two of those eight are Douglas County School District students. In fact, both are from Douglas County High School in Castle Rock.

  • Etash Kalra of Douglas County High School is considering entrepreneurship
  • Justin Kopek of Douglas County High School is pursuing diplomatic service

Corporate Sponsors provide scholarships for students who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage. Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends or single payments.

National Merit $2,500 Winners
We are also thrilled to announce that five DCSD students have been named recipients of 2019 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship awards. These students were selected from a pool of 15,000 finalists! National Merit $2,500 Scholarship recipients have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Congratulations to these outstanding DCSD scholars:

  • Matthew Brown from ThunderRidge High School will pursue the biomedical engineering field
  • Sonia Chu from Rock Canyon High School plans to study mathematics
  • Dale Kim from Rock Canyon High School will pursue the biomedical engineering field
  • Michael Loomer from Chaparral High School will study biochemistry
  • Brian Ma from Mountain Vista High School plans to study medicine

DCSD Home to National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarship Winners

We are thrilled to also announce the third group of winners in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the National Merit finalists who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate student at the institution financing the scholarship.

Congratulations to the following DCSD students:
  • Aldrin Feliciano, STEM School - plans to study mathematics
  • Sarah Gates, Ponderosa High School - plans to study engineering
  • Valerie Kakos, SkyView Academy - plans to study neuroscience
  • Alexis Roth, ThunderRidge High School - plans to study government service
More than 1.6 million students from 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship competition. Recipients of the second and final round of National Merit college-sponsored awards will be announced on July 15.
