Open enrollment begins November 1st
CASTLE ROCK – Douglas County School District’s (DCSD) open enrollment window begins November 1st for families interested in requesting enrollment at a school of their choice. The first round of open enrollment is not first-come, first-served, as families have until December 1st to complete this process.
Parents wishing to enroll their three & four year olds in DCSD preschools do not go through open enrollment. Preschool registration will take place in early January. Follow this link for more information.
Research DCSD schools using the EmpowerED Choices tool
Last year, DCSD unveiled a beta version of a new school choice web tool called EmpowerED Choices. The sophisticated tool enables families to research, compare and navigate DCSD's 87 schools with a variety of variables. Users can identify matches to their preferences based on location, calendar, type of curriculum, teaching philosophy, athletic programs available, specialized programs available and more. The tool additionally has the ability to do a side-by-side comparison of schools so that families can make informed decisions looking at the same key data points across each school.
"Previously, a student or parent looking for a school that offers an IB program in a particular area, for example, would perhaps do their own Google search in which relevant results may or may not come up, or they would manually search school websites one by one, or they would need to call around or ask others for information. It was time consuming to get the specific information families were looking for. The EmpowerED Choices tool eliminates this burden on families and provides all of this data in one place, so the process can now take just a few minutes," said the Director of Choice Programming Thomas McMillen.
How Open Enrollment Works
For parents who wish to keep their student in their current school, or new families who wish for their students to attend their assigned neighborhood school: No action is needed. Open enrollment is only for families that wish to move their student to a school that is different than their assigned neighborhood school.
First round open enrollment is not first-come, first-served; you have until December 1st to complete this process.
You can change your choices at any time until December 1st.
Schools have until December 7th to offer you an open enrollment slot, based on space availability. You will receive an email from the school. You can also log back into the EngagED Parent Portal after December 9th to check your status.
You have until December 15th at 4:00pm to accept an open enrollment offer from a school through the EngagED Parent Portal.
If your application is not accepted by any school, or you didn't log in and accept your offer, you will automatically be placed on the second round open enrollment list, which runs from January 22nd through August 1st.
Second round open enrollment is "first-come, first-served." Students will be placed on the waitlist behind those that are currently on the wait list from first round.
During second round open enrollment schools will reach out to you as space becomes available.
