Application now available for Board of Education seat

CASTLE ROCK – The Douglas County Board of Education has declared a vacancy for the position of Director E, following the resignation of Director Doug Benevento.
 
Benevento, who was elected to the Board of Education in 2009 from District E, submitted his letter of resignation to Board of Education President Meghann Silverthorn in August.  His term expires in November of 2017. 
 
In accordance with Colorado law, the vacancy will be filled by appointment of the Board and the appointee will serve until the next school board election, in November 2017.
 
Anyone interested in being considered for appointment should submit a nomination form accessible on the Douglas County School District website by September 21, 2016

DCSD Board of Education Director District E Application

Board duties and responsibilities may include:
a. acting as an advocate for students and public education;
b. creating a District vision, mission and goals;
c. hiring, evaluating and working with the Superintendent as a unified team;
d. establishing District priorities through approval of the budget; and
e. monitoring student achievement and approving changes in the academic program.

Time commitments may include:
a. reviewing supporting materials and information in preparation for bimonthly and Special Board meetings;
b. attending quarterly off-site retreats and conferences;
c. participating on at least one committee or outside entity;
d. keeping current on education/world events and issues; and
e. attending high school graduations and community events.

Candidates for appointment must:
a. be an eligible elector and a resident of the School District for at least twelve prior consecutive months, as shown on the books of the Douglas County Clerk and Recorder;
b. be a resident of Director District E; and
c. not have been convicted of, pled guilty or no contest to, or received a deferred judgment or sentence for sexual offense against a child.

DCSD is requesting parent input on the health and wellness of our students. Last year, DCSD received a large planning grant from Colorado Health Foundation in an effort to assess how the district supports students through the lens of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model (WSCC). The mission of this grant is to review the current state of DCSD's student health and wellness program, and then formulate a three to five-year plan based on stakeholders’ needs, the latest research, and best practices. As part of this process, we would like your input.

It may look like a plain, white shipping container was just parked on the backyard grounds of Mountain Vista High School. The contents of the container are anything but plain, though. Walking inside the container, different colors of ambient lighting glow, futuristic-looking equipment and tall towers are suspended from the ceiling, and the humidity level is set to 70 percent. The container has been recycled into a new kind of learning opportunity for students.
