Chief Financial Officer addresses the Board

The Douglas County Board of Education convened for business at 7 p.m. on December 12, 2013. The Board conducted business items and engaged public comment from a crowd of students, parents, teachers, and community members.

Board Recognitions

The Board of Education is proud to recognize the achievement of one of our innovative teachers, and some extremely bright and talented students as they prepare for the International Robot Olympiad.

Superintendent's Report

Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Dan McMinimee presented the 2013 CDE District and School Performance Framework. The District's rating remains "Accredited." Ninety-six percent of Douglas County schools received a "Performance" rating, 3 percent received "Improvement" rating and less than 1 percent received a "Priority Turnaround" rating. Ratings are available on the Colorado Department of Education's website.

Chief Financial Officer Bonnie Betz presented the FY 2012-2013 Audit and Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), during her Year-End Fiscal Presentation. State law also requires that an external audit of school district financial information each year. Kevin Smith of McGladrey LLP spoke about the results of the audit. He told the Board that overall the audit went very well and the District received a Clean or UnModified opinion by McGladrey, the highest level of opinion that an organization can receive on its financials.

Board Committee and Liaison Reports

Board President Kevin Larsen spoke about about the invitation the BOE received for the Job Alike 2014 training day for DCSD employees on Friday January 17. The Board voted 4-0 to use their funds to pay for lunches for the teachers involved in the training. 

Public Comment
Adoption of Consent Agenda

The Board voted by a margin of 4-0 to adopt the consent agenda:  Staff recommendations, detailed in Agenda Items #18-#21, organized for the Board of Education block approval.

District News

On February 9 the PACE Center hosted Portfolio Day for students like Sladovnik. It was an opportunity for critiques from working professional artists, and workshops. It culminates in the "Bright Futures" art exhibit - a showcase of selected work on display February 16-27.

Last month, the Board of Education passed a resolution tasking the Superintendent to convene a task force inclusive of members of the general public and staff members. This task force will develop a survey for parents of students eligible for special education services and a survey for staff members who serve students eligible for special education services.

CASTLE ROCK - On February 6, the Douglas County School District (DCSD) Board of Education confirmed its commitment to begin the process of seeking approval from voters for additional local funding.

“Our children need a bond and mill levy override (MLO) to be passed in 2018, beyond any doubt,” said DCSD Board of Education President David Ray. “We want to move forward immediately with the necessary processes and collaboration with our community in order to finalize a formal funding package.”
