DCSD High School Students Spring Forward to Achieve Greatness

Douglas County School District high school athletes excelled in state meets and tournaments in May.  We congratulate all of these excellent student athletes as they demonstrated their skill and dedication to their sport and juggled their end of semester and end of year academic responsibilities.   

BASEBALL
Rock Canyon defeated Chatfield  by a score of 9 to 2 in the state baseball championship game at All City Stadium on May 27th.  They topped Mountain Vista in a hard fought game by a score of 2-1 to reach the championship game.  Congratulations to State Champs, Rock Canyon, and the other great DCSD teams
that competed in the state playoffs.

SCHOLASTIC NEWS FROM CASTLE VIEW HIGH SCHOOL

CVHS SENIORS WINS TWO MAJOR HONORS
Castle View senior Madison Haneke earned two major awards this year:

1) NROTC Full Tuition Scholarship to the University of California at Los Angeles 

2) Girl Scout Gold Award (the highest honor possible):  She led volunteers in sewing just over 100 blankets for babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units at three hospitals in my area: SkyRidge Medical Center, The Children’s Hospital (Anschutz) and Castle Rock Adventist Hospital.

CVHS BOETTCHER SCHOLAR FINALIST
CVHS senior Jordan Tarbutton was selected this year as a Boettcher Foundation Finalist Scholar for Colorado State University.

Each year, the top 1,600 Seniors in Colorado apply for the prestigious Boettcher Scholarship.  From this competitive pool, 100 finalists are chosen based on:

  • Superior Scholastic Ability
  • Evidence of Leadership & Involvement
  • Service to Community and School
  • Outstanding Character

COLORADO STATE ENVIROTHON
The Colorado State Envirothon was a two-day environmental competition held in Alamosa Colorado where high school teams from around the state competed in their knowledge of forestry, soils, aquatic ecology, and wildlife. The special topic was Urban Forestry. 

Three CVHS AP Environmental Science students competed for two days. They were judged by Wildlife Biologists, Foresters, Game Wardens, Soil and Agriculture Specialists, the Division of Wildlife, Colorado State Forests and National Parks and Forestry specialists.

CVHS won the Soils and Aquatic Ecology Divisions and brought home team trophies for 2nd and 3rd place.

District News

Nearly 1,500 Colorado students applied for the prestigious Boettcher Foundation Scholarship this year, with 42 being named recipients. Of those, the Douglas County School District (DCSD) is proudly home to four recipients.

When it comes to mental health services, communities traditionally focus on supporting kids as needs arise. This work is crucial for the safety of our students. Equally important, though, is prevention-based programming that can help, early on, prevent the social-emotional challenges our kids may be experiencing from escalating.

The Apple Awards honors and celebrates excellence in education. This year, more than 5,000 nominations were submitted. 188 Apple Representatives from schools and departments were then selected by the Foundation in January. Of this outstanding group of education leaders, five individuals were awarded with an Apple Award.
