Athletes kick off college careers on National Signing Day

Signing day at Rock Canyon High School

DOUGLAS COUNTY – The statistic tells the story: only three percent of high school seniors receive athletic scholarships to participate in NCAA athletics.

The startling statistic makes the signing day showing by 143 seniors in Douglas County School District (DCSD) impressive. Mountain Vista High School’s (MVHS) athletic program led the state, with 27 students signing letters of intent to play sports in college.

MVHS Athletic Director Pat McCabe reminded attendees at the signing ceremony, “The skills, the offenses and the defenses, the athleticism that it takes to be successful on the court and field; these are merely the vehicles we use to teach kids the important things we want them to learn through sports.”

Douglas County School District Athletic Director Derek Chaney echoed the pride he felt for the DCSD students who signed to play at the next level.

“This day of commitment and celebration signifies the next step forward in academics and athletics for these talented seniors. Schools across the District held signing day events as joyful athletes committed to college and took the next step forward in their storied athletic careers.”

National Signing Day is a nationwide event that represents a chance to honor and recognize those who have committed so much to their sports, schools and teams. These students exemplify the positive life lessons that pure amateur sports teach.

“We want them to learn to make adjustments.  We want them to learn to adapt and persevere.  We want kids to have to work toward a goal and accomplish something not on their own terms, but under the terms set forth by their team.  We want kids to learn to work outside their comfort zone for extended periods of time,” said McCabe. "It is clear that these kids have achieved, in these areas, at a very high level.”

The following DCSD athletes have made a commitment to a college athletic program.

District News

kids running outside as part of a race

DCSD is requesting parent input on the health and wellness of our students. Last year, DCSD received a large planning grant from Colorado Health Foundation in an effort to assess how the district supports students through the lens of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model (WSCC). The mission of this grant is to review the current state of DCSD's student health and wellness program, and then formulate a three to five-year plan based on stakeholders’ needs, the latest research, and best practices. As part of this process, we would like your input.

How are we doing?

We want to hear from you! How often do you prefer to receive email newsletters from DCSD? How can we improve the news and information you receive? This brief survey should only take a minute or two of your time. Thank you for giving us your input!

Tell us what you think, here!

It may look like a plain, white shipping container was just parked on the backyard grounds of Mountain Vista High School. The contents of the container are anything but plain, though. Walking inside the container, different colors of ambient lighting glow, futuristic-looking equipment and tall towers are suspended from the ceiling, and the humidity level is set to 70 percent. The container has been recycled into a new kind of learning opportunity for students.
