Athletics and Activities Return

Athletics and Activities Return on June 22
Posted on 06/17/2020
Dear DCSD Community,

It has been a long road, but I am happy to say we are just days away from the return of Athletics/Activities in the Douglas County School District (DCSD)! Over the last several weeks, we have worked closely with local and state health agencies, the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA), other schools in the metro area, and DCSD leadership to determine when our students could return to athletics and activities. I know all of us - students, coaches/sponsors, and parents - have been looking forward to this day!

Athletics/activities for Summer 2020 will return on June 22. However, things will look a bit different, so I ask you to please carefully review the information below.

Before Athletics/Activities Begin
  • All equipment and areas will be disinfected.
  • Participants must bring their own water and water bottles.
  • All players/students and coaches/sponsors will be required to wear a mask that covers their mouth and nose when arriving and leaving.
  • All players/students and coaches/sponsors will be required to keep their mask on while undergoing a health screening when they arrive. The screening will include answering a series of health questions (in regard to a cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, etc.) and having their temperature taken.
  • Participants will use the provided hand sanitizer during the check-in process.

During Athletics/Activities
  • While participating or working out, players/students can remove their mask, as long as they maintain a distance of six feet between other players/students.
  • Social distancing must be maintained the entire time players/students are together.
  • Coaches/sponsors are responsible for making sure students stay at least six feet apart at all times.
  • A maximum of 10 students will be allowed in any indoor area (gym, weight room, etc.).
  • A maximum of 25 students will be allowed in any outdoor area (fields, open areas, etc.).
  • Restrooms will be available on an emergency basis only.
  • No locker room facilities, dugouts, etc. will be available.
  • No spectators are allowed.

After Athletics/Activities
  • All students must immediately leave the facility/school district property. They will not be allowed to congregate at the facility or in the parking lot.
  • All equipment and surfaces will be sanitized.

Your child’s school will contact you with specific details. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s coach/sponsor, athletic director, or activities director at their school. Please note that this is completely voluntary - students will not be penalized for not participating.

The June 22 start date is for Summer 2020 athletics/activities only. We will continue to partner with local and state health agencies, as well as CHSAA, in regard to the Fall season. Please know that plans may change, based on local and state health orders. I will communicate those changes, as needed.

Thank you for your patience and support. We are anxious to have our students back!

Sincerely,

Derek Chaney
