Mountain Vista Grad Pursuing Career in Naval Aviation

Following high school graduation, Nicholas Romine was inducted into the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from the academy as an officer and is now learning to fly helicopters for the U.S. Navy.

What is your name, which school did you attend, and what year did you graduate?
My name is Nicholas Romine, and I graduated from Mountain Vista High School in 2015.

What have you been doing since graduation?
Right after graduation, I was inducted into the Navy as a member of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. At the academy, I majored in cyber operations and minored in French. I also spent a semester in an exchange program with the Royal Military College of Canada, where I got an in-depth look at the Canadian military. I’m now pursuing a career in naval aviation and learning to fly helicopters for the U. S. Navy. I look forward to earning my wings of gold as a naval aviator.

What is your proudest achievement since graduating?
My proudest achievement is graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Share a positive memory from high school that sticks out to you.
My favorite memory from high school was forming my close group of friends that I still hang out with (long-distance) and, of course, meeting my future wife. We started dating in tenth grade and got married in December!

What was one unique thing you learned about yourself during high school? How did your teachers and school support you?
High school helped me discover my academic passions, including computer science and French, which would eventually lead me to major in cyber operations with a minor in French at the Academy. I remember developing many of my preliminary skills in Mr. Allison's CAD (computer-aided design) engineering class. All of my AP teachers were supportive and helpful in guiding me and allowing me to learn and pursue further knowledge.

What advice would you give your 15-year-old self?
Invest in bitcoin.

What skill (professional or personal) are you trying to master?
Aside from flying helicopters, I am currently writing a science fiction novel. Writing is another skill that I started to develop a passion for in high school with the help and interest of my teachers.

What are your future plans?
I don't know what the Navy has in store for me next, so I plan to simply enjoy my life with my wife and our pet budgie (parakeet) Luna and take it one day at a time.
