Leave of Absence and Disability

Leave of Absence 
The District offers employees Leaves of Absence for time away from work to cover extenuating circumstances in an employee's life. Employee's that expect to be out 5 consecutive work days or longer, will need to contact the Benefits Department to discuss further action. Refer to the revised Board of Education Leave of Absence policy-under REVISION for further information.

Douglas County School District offers short term disability through Standard Insurance to protect your income if you are unable to work due to your own medical condition. After a 14 calendar day waiting period or after all accrued sick days are exhausted. Standard Insurance will pay a base benefit of 70% of your salary.

Steps to be completed for the Leave of Absence process: 
  • Fax medical documentation, completed by your treating physician, to 720-433-0082
  • File a short term disability claim with Standard Insurance by calling 1-800-378-2395
  • Any changes in your leave status should be reported to Benefits and Standard Insurance
  • All Transportation employees will require a Fitness for Duty prior to return to work
PERA Disability Information:

Colorado PERA members with five or more years of earned service credit are covered by a two-tier disability program consisting of a short term disability (STD) insurance and disability retirement benefit. The Disability Program Administrator, UNUM, makes the medical determinations for the program and provides STD coverage through an insurance policy.
