What’s happening?
In March 2026, DCSD will begin additional Kindergarten screening for early signs of reading difficulty, including characteristics of dyslexia. This helps us support children as early as possible.
What is the purpose of the screening?
The screening will assess key indicators of reading risk or dyslexia, including letter naming, letter sounds, and reading words. The purpose of these screenings is to allow us to identify students who may be likely to experience difficulty with reading so we can provide extra, targeted support to those students. Early help leads to stronger reading skills and more confidence. With timely support, most children make strong progress, build confidence, and develop a solid foundation for reading success.
The results from this assessment are NOT intended or designed to diagnose dyslexia.
Why is this important?
Early help leads to stronger reading skills and more confidence. With timely support, most children make strong progress, build confidence, and develop a solid foundation for reading success.
When will screening occur?
The kindergarten screening window will take place from March 3–13, 2026 at each school. As we get closer to those dates we will provide you with more information about what your child can expect.
Screenings will take approximately 15-20 minutes per student. During this time a teacher will sit with your child and go through four short reading risk assessment activities. Your child will be asked to perform small tasks such as identifying letter names, letter sounds and blending sounds to read words.
How will families learn about results?
Families will hear directly from their child’s teacher with information about the screening results and next steps, if needed.
Next Steps: Supporting Your Reader
• Your child will receive timely reading support during the school day.
• This does not indicate your student has a disability and/or would require special education services (IEP) at this time. Many students grow quickly with short-term, targeted support.
