Steps to Becoming a Substitute Teacher in DCSD

STEP 1: 
Applicants must first obtain a substitute authorization from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). This process can take 2-6 weeks per CDE’s website. Please click on the appropriate link below and follow the corresponding checklist on CDE’s website. Be sure to choose the authorization that matches your educational level and authorization type you are seeking. Options include the following:

  1. Three year substitute authorization Applicants must hold a minimum of an earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Applicants will be required to provide their college transcripts to CDE. Application fee: $90.00
  2. Five year substitute authorization applicants must have held a Colorado teacher license (ECE-12). If you currently hold a Colorado teacher license, you do not need to obtain substitute authorization. Application fee: $90.00

STEP 2:
Once you have obtained your substitute authorization from CDE, next you will APPLY for the substitute teacher job posting with DCSD. Please note for New Applicants: If you do not have a profile set up in Workday, our applicant tracking system, from the job posting linked above select "Apply" and then select "Create Account".

To be considered for employment as a DCSD Substitute Teacher, applicants must upload and provide the following items at the time of application:

  1.  Copy of current Colorado Department of Education Teaching License, or Colorado Substitute Authorization
  2. Copies of all official transcripts.
  3. Three Professional References, with a minimum of 2 current or past supervisors.

After applying, the following steps are taken:

  1. Reference checks will be completed
  2. You will be sent a link to schedule a fingerprint appointment with DCSD for your background check. DCSD and CDE both conduct a background check. 
  3. When you have cleared the background check, you will receive a link to attend New Substitute Orientation. 
  4. You will need to complete your Onboarding, including Form I-9 and Mandatory Training. 

Once all of the above has been completed you are ready to substitute teach!
