Meet Sarah Hasler, Sagewood Middle School

Meet Sarah Hasler, Sagewood Middle School
Ann Hriso
Woman in mountains

I was inspired to enter education when I realized how much I love serving others, especially through teaching and building personal connections. My greatest joy comes from helping people grow, learn and discover their own path to success. There is nothing more rewarding to me than knowing I played a part in someone’s journey toward reaching their goals.

My path to becoming a principal has been somewhat unique. Over the past 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving in various educational roles including traditional teaching to being an english language development teacher, learning specialist, gifted and talented facilitator, professional development specialist, district coordinator, and assistant principal.

What brought me to Sagewood Middle School was more than a desire to be a principal - it was a deep connection to our specific community. The timing, the people and the spirit of Sagewood MIddle School made it the perfect fit for me. Returning to the Ponderosa High School feeder truly feels like coming home and I am honored to serve this incredible school and community.

A few years ago, I experienced one of those moments that is a reminder of why I work in education. A former student’s parent reached out to me through social media to share that her daughter was thriving in life, having overcome some significant challenges. I had been her kindergarten teacher back in 2003! I was deeply touched that she remembered me and wanted to share her daughter’s success after all that time. It may seem like a small thing, but to me it was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact we have as educators. You never truly know how you might be changing a life!

I love public education because it brings together people from all walks of life and backgrounds with one shared purpose: supporting the growth and development of our students and community. There is something so powerful in the daily acts of teaching and learning that have the potential to change lives. I cherish this most about public school and that all means all. The work we do is tremendous and I couldn’t be more proud to be a public educator.

Staff appreciation can come in so many forms. I like to surprise staff with goodies from the list of staff favorites and celebrate colleagues through shout-outs in staff meetings. The most meaningful way I’ve found is through personal notes. A handwritten note can lift someone’s spirit and truly honors the unique gifts they bring to our school. I also believe listening with an open heart and taking the time to hear each person’s story are  small acts of connection that go a long way!

My favorite way to energize myself at work is to get up, move around and interact with our middle schoolers. I love popping into classrooms to see what’s going on. Interactive spaces like theater, arts and choir are where I might find myself joining in the fun. You might also catch me practicing a little Spanish or shooting hoops in the gym. Middle school is full of energy and I love jumping in and joining the fun whenever I can!

Outside of work, I love traveling to visit family in Florida - my happy place! When I’m close to home, I enjoy time with family and friends, catching live music, and watching high school and college sports. Spending time outdoors, reading and tennis are all on my list of things I enjoy!
