Meet Heather Kuzma, Redstone Elementary School Interim Principal

My parents were my greatest inspiration for entering the field of education, with my mom having the most profound influence on my journey. Early in life, my mom instilled the values of a love of learning, a heart for service and a belief in the potential of every child - and these continue to guide my work as an educator and leader. She was a reading specialist who dedicated her career to helping children learn to read, believing that literacy opens doors to opportunity and lifelong learning. My dad also earned a teaching degree and deeply valued education. 

Another influential person in my journey was my first grade teacher, who later hired me for my first teaching position because she believed in my ability to make a difference in the lives of children. That experience reinforced my belief in the lasting impact educators have on their students.

My career in education has been driven by a singular purpose: creating lasting impact for students by investing in the people and systems that support them. Whether in the classroom, district leadership or consulting nationally, my focus has remained on strengthening practice, building collective efficacy and empowering educators to grow in service of student success. Supporting educators as they find their authentic voice, navigate the complexities of the profession and recognize their strengths creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond my direct influence.

My leadership style is relational, collaborative and growth-oriented. I believe strong relationships are the foundation for meaningful work, and I strive to create a culture where people feel valued, supported and empowered to do their best work. Above all, I believe leadership is about developing others. My goal is to build collective capacity, empower teachers and staff to lead and create the conditions where both students and adults can thrive. When people work together toward a shared vision, meaningful outcomes for students follow. 

My favorite school traditions are those that celebrate student growth. There is something powerful about recognizing the academic, social and emotional progress students make throughout the year - including watching them gain confidence, overcome challenges and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach. I also value traditions that bring the school community together to celebrate those accomplishments. These moments foster belonging, encouragement and collective pride, and they highlight the impact of strong partnerships among students, staff and families. 

One of my favorite ways to show staff appreciation is by being present in classrooms and taking time to genuinely see teaching and learning in action. There is something powerful about witnessing the daily work of teachers - the relationships they build, the instruction they deliver and the way they respond to students in real time. I also believe appreciation is most meaningful when it is specific and grounded in what I observe. Recognizing the heart of a teacher’s practice - whether it is strong instruction, meaningful student interaction or a positive classroom culture - all help staff feel seen and valued.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling to beautiful places, and making the most of the incredible seasons in Colorado. I also enjoy time on the golf course - it’s a great way to unwind, enjoy the outdoors and keep working on finding my swing.
