Jumping Together at Sedalia Elementary

Sedalia Elementary’s amazing PE Teacher, Ashley Collins, is currently teaching her students to jump rope. Two students from our Significant Support Needs (SSN) program who attend this class were included in the lesson, reminding us what makes this school so extraordinary.

“PE is meant to be a place where every student belongs. There is joy when kids feel safe to move, try new things and simply be kids,” shared Collins. “Sometimes that joy comes from a game, sometimes from the music and sometimes from the shared laughter in the room.

“At Sedalia Elementary, our PE class feels like a family - one where students support one another, celebrate each other’s successes and grow together. Creating that kind of environment, where all students can experience pure joy and a true sense of belonging, is the heart of our PE classroom,” said Collins.

One student, Reece, has goals focused on getting out of his wheelchair and walking with support - work that typically happens with his SSN team. With encouragement and support from Collins (a former SSN educational assistant), he walked to the long rope and proudly participated in his turn jumping. His classmates also made sure he could keep the fun going by helping him jump while in his wheelchair.

Another student, Rylan, who also uses a wheelchair, had an incredible time during class. He was more expressive and engaged than ever, clearly enjoying being an active part of the lesson alongside his peers.

We already know how remarkable this group of fourth graders is and how intentionally they work to include all students. Their enthusiasm, combined with Collins’ dedication to ensuring everyone belongs, made Sedalia Elementary feel even more special that day.
