Denver's 5280 Magazine Names Three DCSD Schools to Top Elementary List

Denver’s 5280 Magazine names three DCSD elementary schools to its list of Top Elementary Schools in the Denver area. The article, Primary Colors, written by Luc Hatlestad names Flagstone, Stone Mountain and Timber Trail elementary schools in Castle Rock, in its listing of top elementary schools in Denver.

Flagstone Elementary is highlighted for its library collection of more than 10,000 books, its extensive computer facilities, and its online newspaper the Tie Dye Times, which students from first to sixth grade contribute to on a regular basis.

Stone Mountain Elementary is featured for its character development program, the principal’s online blog and school newsletter, and a parent portal where parents are able to monitor their children’s activities and progress.

Timber Trail Elementary is noted for its Watch D.O.G.S. program, where fathers donate time to the school with the aim of providing positive male role models for its students, the school’s arts, music and PE curriculum, and its distinction as a three-time John Irwin award winner.

Schools were evaluated in a one-county radius around Denver, including Boulder, and were selected using the Colorado Growth Model, which assesses schools according to levels of academic proficiency – in math, reading and writing, and growth. Schools were chosen based on high scores in both categories across all three subject areas, with special consideration given to schools with a higher Free-and-Reduced Lunch population.

Parenting with Love and Logic

The Community University is once again offering the popular Parenting with Love and Logic course. Participants will learn that mistakes made early in a child's life provide valuable learning opportunities if handled appropriately by parents. Participants also will learn the importance of holding children accountable for their poor decisions through the use of logical or natural consequences, as well as why giving repeated warnings and lectures interferes with the development of responsibility and character. Love and Logic is a philosophy founded by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D., and is based on the experience of a combined total of more than 75 years working with and rearing children.

Days: Four Tuesdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 28; Oct. 5; Oct. 12; and Oct. 19.

Location: Cantril Building, 312 Cantril Street, Castle Rock
