DCSD Special Education Advisory Council

Our Mission and Purpose
Our mission is to assure that the parent and family perspective is honored and acknowledged as an integral component of the educational journey, and serve as an integral part of the decision making process at all levels within the Douglas County School District.

The general intent of the council is to gather, communicate and disseminate information to key stakeholders, as well as advocate, influence, and support programming for students with disabilities in Douglas County School District.

Our General Scope of Work Includes:

The council promotes family involvement through a variety of outreach methods, opportunities and activities.

The council shall provide support and resources to empower families toward successful life long learning.

The intent of the council is to serve in an advisory capacity to the district regarding new policies, trends and concerns.

The intent of the council is to provide a collaborative voice to identify, advise or respond to special education issues and disseminate information to families and the district accordingly.

The Purpose of the Council is to:
  • Ensure appropriate services for all students with disabilities.

  • Establish and maintain communication with the Colorado Special Education Advisory Committee, and other parent organizations.

  • Provide input on any rules and regulations at the district, state, or federal level regarding the education of children with disabilities as they apply to Douglas County students.

  • Establish open communication between all individuals interested in the education of students with disabilities.

  • Provide information and educational resources to parents, educators, students and professionals on opportunities to support students with disabilities.

  • Collect feedback from stakeholders on current policies and practices.

  • Advise the executive director of Instructional Support Services and district administration on operations and development of special education programs, parent and teacher training needs, and help influence district policy.

  • Review and submit suggestions about district budget and prioritizing of needs.
