2009-2010 Student Learning Goals

Goal 1 Goal 2 Goal 3

Interpretation

Responsible Citizens are those who possess the understandings, skills and abilities to contribute positively to our society (classroom, school, community, state, nation and world).  The foundation of thinking and ethics is integrated in all that is taught through the curriculum, the modeling of adults within our organization and the co-curricular program offerings.

Key Strategies

•  Develop Thinking Classrooms and a “Culture of Thinking” throughout the Douglas County School District where “thinking is visible, valued and promoted.”
•  Foster Student Voice and Engagement to ensure that our students have opportunities to think critically, ethically, and demonstrate positive leadership.

Goal 1 Resources

Interpretation

The skills of reading, writing and mathematics are the foundation to overall student academic success. By ensuring that all students acquire these essential skills and by addressing gaps in learning as early as possible, our students will be more successful in acquiring the core body of knowledge identified through subend 1.8.

Key Strategies

•  Deliver effective instruction in reading, writing and mathematics to ensure all students will gain a year or more growth.
•  Provide evidence based prevention, intervention, instructional and assessment strategies using culturally responsive pedagogy in a Response to Intervention (RtI).

The understandings rooted in the core body of knowledge (1.8), fine arts (1.9), and exploration beyond the liberal arts (1.10) are paramount in preparing Douglas County School District students for the 21st century. Many content areas may be engaged in continuous improvement efforts; however, only those referenced as key strategies are receiving systemic prioritization.

Key Strategies

•  Strengthen educational opportunities for students to ensure competitive 21st century learners through, but not limited to: World Languages, K-12 Educational Technology and Information Literacy, Post Secondary and Work Force Readiness, Choice Schools and Programs (Virtual/OnLine Learning, K-12 International Baccalaureate).

Goal 3 Resources

Douglas County School District seeks to provide a liberal arts education supporting the development of responsible citizens who are contributing members of society. This vision calls for our students to think critically, embrace ethical principles, demonstrate self-motivation and resourcefulness, apply their learning, lead with integrity and take ownership of their own well being.

The Learning Services Division includes: Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment; Educational Programming and Services; and School Supervision. Collectively, Learning Services provides District leadership and support in critical components of effective schooling – preschool through post-secondary.
