Healthiest School/Worksite Competition

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is DCSD running a Healthiest School / Worksite Competition?
A: In February 2009, DCSD decided to take on the challenge of becoming the Healthiest School District in the US by 2015. The motivation behind this goal is that healthy teachers teaching healthy students in a healthy environment yield great results. While thousands of individuals (employees, students, and DCSD community members) are already taking part in the wellness initiatives by participating in the pedometer program, the Healthiest School / Worksite Competition aims to give the 80+ worksites that comprise DCSD more visibility while tying together the multiple efforts and success stories of the individuals who work in these schools / sites. In addition, many of you have been asking for the ability to compete against other schools and worksites, and we thought it was a great idea!

Q: How will we know where our building stands in the competition?
A:

On the last day of the month (or first working day of the following month if the last day of the month is a weekend or holiday), results for the pedometer competition will be posted on the Sonic Boom website. You will also be able to see which schools / worksites are in the lead on the Sonic Boom website throughout the duration of each striding competition by watching the Leaderboards.

Then, at the beginning of the month following each competition, the results of the entire month’s activities will be displayed on the DCSD website under Human Resources >> Employee Benefits >> Wellness >> Healthiest School / Worksite Competition.

Each month, three schools or worksites will be recognized for achieving First Place, Second Place, and Third Place in each of the three competition targets, as well as the overall winners.

Q: How does scoring work?
A:

Each month, schools / worksites will be given up to three competition elements (or targets) to participate in. The overall winner each month will be decided based on the school or building with the most points. First Place in each competition element is worth 3 points; Second Place is worth 2 points, and Third Place is worth 1 point.

Q: Will our school / worksite win anything for being in the lead?
A:

Schools / worksites will be given recognition each month by way of postings on the Wellness area of the DCSD website.

In December 2010, there will be an awards ceremony, recognizing high achieving schools / sites and individuals. The format for this recognition ceremony is yet to be determined.

Q: How will my activity be counted over the summer?
A:

In June, July, and August, the competition is purely based on Sonic Striding, or the pedometer program. Even if you are not coming to a DCSD building for work during those months, you can still stop by any open DCSD building and have your pedometer read by walking within 200 feet of a reader.

Q:

I really don’t want to come to a DCSD building over the summer. Is there any other way I can get my ped read?

A:

If you do not want to come to a DCSD building during the summer, then you can purchase an at-home reader (called an Actilink) for $35. You can purchase the Actilink by sending a check made out to DCSD for $35 to Brian Ewert in Human Resources, 620 Wilcox, Castle Rock. Please include your name and work location with your check; the Actilink will be sent to you via inter-school mail, and instructions for downloading the Actilink software are located on the DCSD website under Human Resources >> Employee Benefits >> Wellness Program >> Pedometer Program >> Actilink Installation Guide 01/10.

You may also borrow an Actilink for a period of one month, renewable up to 3 times OR for the summer months, May 24th 2010 – August 9th 2010. In order to borrow an Actilink, just click on the “Actilink Loan” link on the DCSD website under Human Resources >> Employee Benefits >> Wellness Program >> Pedometer Program >> Actilink Loan.  You will receive the Actilink within one week of the request.

If you lose or damage the link, you will be asked to pay back the School District the entire cost of the link, which is $35.

Q:

Are there any special provisions made for those of us who work at track schools?

A:

Because of the way the DCSD calendars are constructed, there will be times in which a pedometer competition ends when a school is off track. If you are in this situation, you have three options: (1) you can stop by ANY DCSD building and have your pedometer data read; (2) you can purchase an at-home reader called an Actilink for $35 so that you can have your data read wherever you have a computer; or (3) you can borrow an Actilink (see question above).

Remember that several of the elements that comprise the competition do not involve the pedometer, so your contributions in those areas at any time of the year will help your school / worksite be a top contender!

Q:

Can our site opt out of the competition?

A:

All sites are automatically included in the Competition, which means that each month scores for all sites will be posted on the DCSD website.

Q:

Who participates in the panels for the Healthiest Food Environment and Best On-Site Wellness Programming competitions?

A:

The panels consist of SUPER CHAMPIONS (employees), DCSD and Union leadership, and a member of Health at Work, our health and wellness advisor.

Q:

I like participating in the pedometer competitions with other employees in my school.  Will I still be able to do this once the Healthiest School / Worksite Competition begins?

A:

Yes, you can absolutely still participate in striding competitions as either an individual or with a team. Your efforts will simply contribute to your school or worksite’s overall ranking.

Q:

How will my participation in a 5K be verified?

A:

You will need to bring in proof of your participation, such as a roster showing your finishing time, or your participation bib. If you participate in a District-sponsored race, your name will be recorded during the registration process.

Q:

In my worksite, only a small handful of employees are participating in the competition. Won’t this hurt our chances of being in the lead?

A:

Not in most cases since participation is based off of the averages for participants who have registered pedometers. However, in some months, the competition is based on how many people at each site are participating in the Sonic Striding program. If we’re aiming to be the Healthiest School District in the US by 2015, we need everyone to participate, not just a few people. In addition, the more people participate at each school, the easier (and more enjoyable) it becomes for everyone else.

Q:

How can I get a pedometer for my spouse and / or students?

A:

Spouses, children, parents, and even your friends can participate in the pedometer program. The cost of one year of access to the Sonic Boom website and the pedometer itself is $60. Unless the spouse / child / friend has access to DCSD building, they will need to buy an Actilink for $35 so that their pedometer can be read at home.

You may request to purchase a ped and / or Actilink by sending an email to champions@hatwork.com
