Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Risk Management?
A:

The Risk Management Department has several functions including prevention of accidents and protecting the assets of the Douglas County School District. The objectives of the Risk Management Department are to support the educational mission of the district by maximizing the dollars available to the classroom, keeping students and employees safe while at school, and protecting the assets of the school district. These objectives are accomplished by:

  1. Increasing productivity by keeping trained employees safely on the job
  2. Creating a safe and healthy work environment
  3. Minimizing the cost of providing service through competitive bids
  4. Developing an insurance program which combines self insured levels with commercial insurance to offer proper insurance coverage at the lowest cost possible

Q: Where is Risk Management?
A:

The Risk Management office is located in the Administration Building, 620 Wilcox Street, Castle Rock. The office is staffed by John Zimmerman, Director of Risk Management, Brennan Mendus, Assistant Risk Manager, Zach Nannestad, Environmental Health Manager, Debbie Warren, Secretary to the Director, and TJ Crawford, Workers' Compensation Case Manager. Feel free to contact us at (303) 387-0036.

Q: Am I protected from liability while doing my job?
A:

As a District employee, you are covered by the District's liability insurance program against civil liability claims as long as you are acting within the scope of your duties. Similar to other Governmental Entities, the School District has immunity from most lawsuits, under the terms of the Colorado Governmental Immunity Act.

Q: Does the District pay the medical costs when a student gets hurt at school?
A:

The District does not purchase, or have in place any medical insurance to cover injuries to students, whether incurred at school or while on activity trips. Parents are responsible for providing medical insurance coverage for their children.

Q: What if I get hurt on the job? What do I do?
A:

Detailed information about the District's Workers' Compensation Program is on the web site under Risk Management: Forms. Basically, if you get hurt, even if it is a minor injury, you need to immediately report to your supervisor and complete a Job Accident Report, which is available from your supervisor or on our website. Please call Risk Management if you do not understand the instructions on the Job Accident Report or with any other questions you may have about work related injuries.
