Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does a student get into the Pre-IB program?
A: Students can gain admission into the program by submitting a completed application to the IB office at Douglas County High School. Applicants who are hardworking, have at least a B average, and are seeking an academic challenge will be considered for the program. Students attending any of the district's other six high schools may open-enroll at Douglas County High School to participate in the Pre-IB program.

Q: What does the Pre-IB look like?
A: The Pre-IB course work is designed to refine students' study skills, writing skills and reasoning skills In order to build an academic foundation to prepare students for success in the IB program.

Q: How do students and families indicate their interest in the Pre-IB program?
A: The IB coordinator for Douglas County High School is Steven Fleet, and he can be reached at 303-387-1131 or steven.fleet@dcsdk12.org. Interested students may also talk with their counselor and school administrators.

Q: What is the difference between IB and Honors/AP?
A: IB is a comprehensive worldwide curriculum culminating in exams. It is a rigorous, international program designed for the college-bound student. Advanced Placement (AP) is a series of American examinations in a specific subject area. Both IB and AP programs offer advanced placement in college. All district high schools will continue to offer Honors/AP classes.

Q: What does it cost to be in the IB program?
A: Students will be required to pay for their IB exams, which total approximately $600 in their senior year.
