Assistive Technology

SWAAAC

SWAAAC stands for Statewide Alternative Augmentative Assistive Communication. SWAAAC teams provide expert, multi-disciplinary Assistive Technology services to enable students with disabilities full access and participation in all educational opportunities.

Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology (AT) is any tool that helps people function more effectively at home, school, work or play. For some students, AT is the lifeline that provides them with equal access to information and learning in the classroom and the world.

Who uses assistive technology?

Potential users of AT are students with disabilities that interfere with their communication, learning, social relationships, mobility, and active participation in the general curriculum.

News From Assistive Technology-SWAAAC Department

The Assistive Technology-SWAAAC department held an inservice on the November 3, 2006 PLC day, for the Early Childhood Preschool department. The AT-SWAAAC Team discussed how to access the AT team, guidelines on referring students, and strategies to try with students. Hands on break out sessions provided staff opportunities to interact and explore low technology, mid technology, high technology and computers. Resource materials and handouts were provided. The sessions ended with a video: Welcome to my Preschool! Communicating with Technology. Feedback was positive and overall, preschool staff felt more knowledgeable in including all students in classroom activities.
