Did You Know...

  • Every dollar we choose to give to the utility company is one less dollar we have to spend on students.

  • Every one of us can help control our utility expenses.

  • If we can turn off the lights in every room for an additional hour per day, we can save over $200,000 per year.

  • Utilities expenditures last year exceeded $9,250,000 (electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, irrigation, trash).

  • $5,750,000 was spent on electricity alone!

  • Lighting is approximately 40% of our electricity usage.

  • Unlike residential electric bills, our bills have an additional charge, demand charge. The demand charge is based on peak electric load during the billing period. Demand Charges account for over 50% of our electrical expenses.

  • A common energy myth says that it is less expensive to leave fluorescent lighting on, instead of turning it off. With the current technology, if you turn a fluorescent light off for 1 second, you start saving. So, it is always better to turn the lights off when you leave a room.

  • The District is expanding our current energy management program to include the building occupants and all District staff. We are not asking you to sacrifice your comfort. We do need everyone to do their part to ensure effective use of our resources.

  • The District adopted the new energy policy (ECF) on March 14th, 2005.

 

ENERGY POLICY

The Douglas County School District will support a district-wide energy and utility management program. The program will focus on limiting expenditures for utilities thus allowing more effective use of the District’s financial resources. The program will also demonstrate the District’s social responsibility by a commitment to resource conservation and protection of the environment.

The energy and utility management program will use a systems perspective and provide strategies for integration and alignment of conservation efforts throughout the District. This will include use of best management practices and conservation guidelines for various departments and work groups including administration, instructional staff, and support staff.

Implementation of this policy will be the responsibility of the Operations and Maintenance Department working in cooperation with staff and students.
