Career and Technical Education programs will teach you employment
skills which will prepare you to start your career, or continue to
post-secondary educational opportunities. There are many different CTE
programs available to you during your high school career. Each program
addresses life skills in certain areas as well as general employment
skills. Enrolling in these programs will give you the head start that
other students may not have. Here are your choices:
Agriculture - Courses offered to students include agribusiness
management, horticulture management, landscape development and
introduction to animal science.
Business - Students study business computer applications, including
word processing, spreadsheets, database management, desktop publishing,
Powerpoint, Internet, intranet and web page design. Additional topics
covered may include entrepreneurship, communications, accounting, law,
career development skills and portfolios, study skills, team building
techniques, personal and time management, and work experience.
Marketing - This program offers the student opportunities to learn
about marketing strategies such as planning, promoting, distributing
and selling, which are essential elements of any business.
Employability, communication, leadership, and computer skills are also
an important part of the program. Students may have the opportunity to
learn by doing: participating in a sales lab project, a fashion show,
field trips and DECA competitions. Work experience allows students to
earn school credit while gaining valuable on-the-job training.
Consumer and Family Studies - Consumer and Family Studies courses build
skills for a balanced lifestyle. Educational standards are reinforced
through career development, personal resource management,
communication/conflict resolution skills, health and nutrition
analysis. In-depth focus areas include early childhood development,
interior design, culinary arts and the fashion industry. Opportunities
for work experiences are available through placement in paid work,
career shadows and observations. College credit and national youth
organization memberships are offered. Practical application and
hands-on experiences are incorporated into class content.
Alternative Cooperative Education - The ACE Program allows students as
young as 15 years of age to work for school credit. This is an ideal
program for students (who may find it difficult to be in school all
day), to find success through employment. This program begins with
students becoming aware of his/her career interests through various
resources such as the Choices program and the COPS system. Students
experience a professional work day through a job shadow experience and
then present a Powerpoint presentation highlighting what they saw.
Interviewing skills, life skills (taxes, budget, etc.), communication,
teamwork, problem solving, goal setting, etc. are just some of the
units taught. Hands-on experiences, Junior Achievement Programs, and
fund raisers are also part of the curriculum.
Don’t wait! Investigate the options available to you before it’s too late.
