Board of Education Overview

| The Board of Education is comprised of seven members representing
different parts of the county. Members are elected at large and serve
staggered terms of four years. The Board of Education meets twice
monthly, except the months of January and July, on the first and third
Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. Variations to this schedule may occur, and
Special Meetings may be scheduled as determined by the President of the
Board. Please check the Meeting Agendas & Minutes link on this page
to view meeting dates and times, agendas and minutes. Meetings are held
at the Douglas County School District Wilcox Administration Building in
the Board Room on the 3rd floor at 620 Wilcox Street in Castle Rock.
Board members actively seek the advice and counsel of District
residents. Citizens are encouraged to regularly attend Board meetings.

End Statements
On June 21, 2005, the Board of Education gave final approval to their highest level statement of our purpose, in the form of two End Statements.
These statements outline how high the district sets the bar for running schools and supporting students. Final approval of these statements follows a year of development and feedback from a range of staff, parent and community groups and Board work sessions.

Policy Governance
Policy Governance, adopted in July 2001, shifts the focus of the Board to a more strategic approach. The new concise policy manual propels the Board into a monitoring role in the school district, with an emphasis on broad, strategic initiatives.As directed by policy governance, Board members use the format of three subcommittees based on the strategic directions of the district—Student Achievement, Effective Use of Resources and Responsive Governance—to help create a focus for goal achievement.

Administrative Policies

| The existing Board of Education policies are currently being aligned with Policy Governance and will be known as Administrative Policies, still under the Board of Education umbrella for approval and will be operational guidelines for staff.

Long Range Planning Committee
|
| The charge of this committee is to study school district facility and capacity needs. This citizen based group keeps close track of new housing developments and student enrollment trends. Recommendations are made to the Board of Education on capacity needs, school locations, attendance boundaries, and other issues related to facilities. Members represent all areas of the county. Two at-large members, a representative of the development and home building communities, as wells as teacher and principal representatives also serve on this committee.

District Advisory Committee

| In Colorado, it is a statutory requirement for every school district to have a District Advisory Committee (DAC). The DAC provides opportunities for parents and community members to become informed about and to be involved in the planning and evaluation of the School District’s instructional program and quality improvement processes. The DAC reviews and makes recommendations to the Board of Education concerning the School Advisory Council’s plans to improve the educational achievement in the school’s, focusing on methods of maximizing graduation rates from the District’s secondary schools, and increasing the ratings of the school’s accreditation category. The DAC, following consultation with the School Advisory Council, makes recommendations to the Board of Education relative to the prioritization of expenditures of School District moneys. Evening monthly meetings of the District Advisory Committee are held the second Tuesday, commencing in September.

School Advisory Councils
|
| In Colorado, it is a statutory requirement for every school to have a School Advisory Council (SAC). The purpose of the SAC is to provide opportunities for parents, staff, and community members to be involved in the planning and evaluation of their individual school’s instruction programs along with being a representative voice for the community. They make recommendations to the school principal on the school-wide action planning and goals for improvement, as well as the school budgeting process.
