Policies and Procedures

  • Plan and reserve ahead. Please allow at least 24 hours following your request to get the items out to you.

  • Observe the time limits for checking out material, and send it back promptly as other teachers may be waiting.

  • Please remember that it is the duty of the classroom teacher to properly preview unfamiliar materials, especially videos.

  • The staff of the DMC must adhere to Colorado's Library Confidentiality Law. We may not disclose information pertaining to other patrons and the material they have borrowed.

  • Never pass on materials to a teammate or a teacher at another site without calling the DMC first.

  • It is the teacher's responsibility to pay the replacement cost of lost or damaged materials.

  • Fragile equipment must be picked up and returned in person instead of using warehouse delivery.

  • Please be sure to check for cables, cords, adapters, user guides, etc. before returning equipment.

  • Home school parents must register with the district and observe the checkout policies pertaining to them.

  • We do not lend materials to short-term substitute teachers.

  • We do not carry lecterns, chart boards, microscopes, or computers.

Home Schooling Checkout Policy

The Douglas County School District supports home schooling as another option or choice for parents. In doing so, the district makes the District Media Center available to parents who choose home schooling.

Only home schoolers registered with the Douglas County School District will be allowed access to media materials. Persons checking out materials will be asked to sign a personal responsibility form, which will be kept on file in the DMC

The District Media Center is forced to restrict the accessibility and the length of use on some items because of limited material availability. Following are the guidelines that have been established to meet the needs of regular classroom teachers as well as home schooling parents.

  • Videotapes may be checked out for a maximum of 48 hours.
  • Anatomical models and culture kits may be checked out for 24 hours or over the weekend (Friday afternoon until Monday morning).
  • All other resources (books, CD-ROM, etc.) have a checkout period of two weeks.
  • Novel Sets, audio/visual equipment, and materials from the music collection are not available for home school instruction.
  • Renewal of materials may be handled over the telephone. If teachers are waiting, these materials will not be renewed.

The home school parent will be held responsible for the loss or damage of any materials borrowed from the District Media Center.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. We look forward to working with you.

Statement About State Patron Confidentiality Law

The Douglas County Schools District Media Center (DMC) upholds the Colorado State Patron Confidentiality Law. This law prohibits library staff from revealing the titles of resources checked out by patrons to any individual or entity. As a result, please consider this limitation when requesting specific materials. If a material you request is checked out to another, we may not legally reveal the name of that individual. We appreciate your support in this matter.
