Middle School and High School Literacy Specialists

A literacy specialist is a certified teacher who works in conjunction with the Literacy Office and a Middle School or High School, to provide technical support, staff development and literacy coaching to content area teachers as well as in teaching literacy classes to students who are identified with greatest need and who are showing significant growth.

The Secondary Literacy Specialist provide direct instruction to the lowest achieving ILP students for 40% of their work day either in small group pull-out setting in the Middle Schools or in the Read/Write Strategies class in the High Schools.  60% of the Specialists workday is spent providing coaching and mentoring to content area teachers of best practice, literacy strategies to impact student achievement in the universal or classroom setting. This 60/40 model is endorsed by the International Reading Association.

Literacy Specialists are endorsed in, or have 24 semester hours of, secondary reading or literacy content area, have a Colorado Professional Teaching License (Secondary), and have at least 3 years of current teaching experience.  A Masters degree or reading endorsement is preferred.
