Guide to Instructional Support Services Staff

When talking about public education, the first image that likely comes to mind is that of the teacher. In Douglas County School District (DCSD), much goes on behind the scenes to serve our growing student population. It is called Instructional Support Services (ISS).

ISS Consist of five major divisions: English as a Second Language, Gifted and Talented, Literacy, Early Childhood Education and Special Education. ISS also supports 32 programs, including homebound, mental health, speech/language and homeless services for students. Essentially all the services that supplement and complement delivery of the general education curriculum.

Mission Statement

The purpose of Instructional Support Services is to provide the support necessary for all students to access the general curriculum to the greatest extent appropriate. Students may need Special Education, English as a Second Language, Gifted and Talented or additional Literacy services to achieve success.

Critical Functions

Instructional Support Services will not fail to:

  1. Ensure quality instruction and support for diverse learners to achieve the End Statements.

  2. Provide technical assistance in areas of compliance, best practices and research based instruction.

  3. Engage in data-driven decision making to guide programming, professional development and allocation of resources.

  4. Implement systemic approaches that ensure performance excellence and sustainability.

  5. Communicate relevant information to stakeholders in a timely manner.

  6. Build leadership capacity that allows for shared ownership and effective decision making at the level closest to the learner.

  7. Align efforts district wide.

  8. Influence policy and practices at the local, state, and national levels.

  9. Promote parent and community partnerships.

  10. Advocate for diverse learners.
